This is another of those extraordinary bargain-priced ACME dvds, and in this one you earn two awesome Hedy Lamarr classics. Lamarr was one of the most magnificent and underated actresses of her time and she never gave a poor performance.

First we have Robert Stevenson’s classic semi-noir “Dishonored Lady”, which has Lamarr playing a shrinking woman who’s drawn to men in the same method they’re drawn to her: lust. But when she meets Dennis O’Keefe she finds out what fair esteem is like, and she tries to change her ways. When an customary “flame” of hers turns up murdered, however, she is the only suspect. Lamarr is then on trial for 1st degree cancel, while O’Keefe is heartbroken learning about her insecure past and affairs with men. Will they gain the proper murderer, and will O’Keefe forgive Lamarr for decieving him? Study and bag out! By the design, Lamarr was married to co-star John Loder at the time this movie was made.

Next, we have Edgar G. Ulmer’s classic “Odd Woman”, which has one of Lamarr’s greatest (if not THE greatest) performances of her entire career. She plays a seductive woman (to perfection) who goes after one man after another in a exiguous, 19th-century Maine town. After she makes the mistake of marrying an frail man, she even seduces the man’s son (that’s suitable, her step-son!) . When she finally meets the fair man (George Sanders), her alarmed past comes befriend to haunt her. The best blueprint I can portray this awesome classic is a 19th-century version of Peyton Residence! Edgar G. Ulmer was legendary for making mammoth movies on shoestring budgets, but this was a rare chance for him to have a grade “A” cast, and he extinct it to perfection. Aside from George Sanders and sexy Hedy Lamarr, this classic also has Louis Hayward, Gene Lockhart, and Hillary Brooke (who later became a regular on the Abbott and Costello Explain) .

The bonus feature on this dvd is a brief vintage Paramount preview of coming attractions from the studio, with footage of Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and even a brief gaze of the classic film noir “I Trudge Alone”, with Lizabeth Scott and Burt Lancaster. This is one of the grand noirs that has never been released on vhs or dvd, so this is a rare chance to eye a couple clips from that gigantic movie. The sound quality was mostly agreeable in both movies, but the relate quality of “Dishonored Lady” left a lot to be desired. For most of the movie the represent shaked slightly, making it study like a cheap EP vhs copy. However, it isn’t too distracting after a while. The record quality of “Curious Woman” was extraordinary. This is my second ACME double feature dvd I’ve purchased and I’m very blissful. If you’re a Hedy Lamarr fan at all then this dvd is an absolute must!

“Acme” is the Double Feature division of “VCI/fi” and I’ve always had marvelous luck with VCI releases so I took a chance.

DISHONORED LADY: This is a unbelievable film in which Hedy displays a range of emotions including tipsy. She is a gracious actress and is totally shapely as a NYC “unusual woman” with a promiscuity scrape, she’s a “user” and hangs out with other “users”, she becomes despondent. Through the provedential intervention of a wise shrink, one wonders if she will overcome it and pick up just happiness as a simple doctor’s wife — or revert to life as a well-paid, hi-fashion magazine editor. She is also alive to in a kill investigation and suspicions turn her scheme. Eye for Margaret Hamilton. The Yarn is a “5″ Characterize quality is about a “4″ its not perfect but completely watchable and scrumptious, the night scenes are a itsy-bitsy sunless, but all others have reliable incompatibility with no noticable artifacts or blotches. The sound is very splendid, its even & exact and when you turn the volume up it does’nt notify. The VCI Double Feature disc is a genuine bargain impartial for this movie alone, BUT seek you also have—

STRANGE WOMAN: This stars Hedy Lamarr as well as George Sanders, Louis Hayward, Gene Lockhart, Hillary Brooke, Rhys Williams, June Anecdote, Moroni Olsen, Olive Blakeney, Kathleen Lockhart, Alan Napier, Dennis Hoey. The position begins in Bangor Main in 1824 with Jennie Hagar as a child of about 8 at a swimming hole with some other childern all speaking with California accents. Then the next scene is of Jennie played by Hedy with a foreign accent, noticably missing in the whole town is Main accents, but then this is the charm of worn movies. Hedy plays a manipulative temptress who marries a worthy older man out of need. She plays a range of emotions in this drama. Its an savory film for any Hedy Lamarr fan. The DVD quality on this film is quite reliable about the same as the previous film, it does a microscopic better in the black scenes. And the sound is definite and dependable with no deny when the volume is turned plot up.

EXTRA FEATURE: “Made In America” a newsreel style advertisement/documentary about Hollywood and all the movies “in the can” and soon to be released, showing some tedious the scene looks inorder to slouch up interest in future releases.

Like many other films by Canadian director David Cronenberg (especially Crash), Dead Ringers presents the cinematic and psychological equivalent of an automobile accident–you dare not look, but you can’t turn away. The film marked a directorial breakthrough for Cronenberg, who was able to continu some of the themes explored in his earlier horror films while graduating to a higher, more critically “respectable” level of artistic sophistication. The film is loosely based, amazingly enough, on a tru story about twin gynecologists who routinely traded each others’ identities, lives and even lovers. Utilizing innovative split-screen technology (years before computer manipulation made such trickery much easier), the film stars Jeremy Irons in flawless dual roles as the identical brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle. Their ability to instantly switch identities leads them to a shared relationship with a well-known actress (Genevieve Bujold) and, ultimately, a physical and psychological tailspin that sends them both to the brink of madness and death. The scenario suggests that both men are halves of a whole, and that one cannot exist without the other. But when Beverly pursus a kinky, drug-addicted affair with the actress, his more self-controlled brother is helpless to prevent their mutual decline. In this way Dead Ringers becomes a fascinating and stylistically clinical study of duality, and Cronenberg doesn’t shy away from the dark and unpleasant aspects of the story.
